Red Sox Midget A Win Silver in Kincardine!

2018-06-12

Red Sox Midget A Team

...

The Red Sox Midget A team went 4-1 to finish with the Silver Medal in Kincardine.

The team had round robin victories over Amherstburg Cardinals, Markham Mariners and Mansfield Cubs, and a semi-final win over the host Kincardine Cardinals before losing to Belle River Braves in the Sunday final.

In Game 1 against Amherstburg, Ty Bond took a no-hitter to 2-outs in the 7th before giving up a hit.  Offense was provided by Jake Timal going 4-for-4 on-base and scoring 3 runs.  Andy McLaren, Chris Hsu and Duncan Payne chipped in with RBIs and Jordan Hakooz was solid on defense with 3 outfield put outs.  The final score was 5-1 for Pickering.

Game 2 against Mansfield Cubs was a see-saw battle over 5 innings, with Pickering scoring 2 in the top of the 5th to come from behind and then hold on for a 5-4 win. James "Big Game" Petrou pitched a solid 5 strikeout appearance and was supported on offense by Mark Shorter with 3 RBIs, including the clutch 2-out 2-strike 2 RBI hit in the top of the 5th to drive in the tying and winning runs.

Against Markham in Game 3 the Red Sox were looking to go 3-0 in the round robin and secure a top seed. Jordan Hakooz pitched a complete 7-inning game 6-4 victory with runs and RBIs coming from the whole lineup, including Cole Brown with a triple and Jon Ramnarace and Jake Campbell contributing key runs and RBIs.

For the semi-final at 1130am on Sunday the Red Sox drew the host team from Kincardine.  The Pickering offense got an early start scoring 3 runs before the first out and continued to add runs in almost every inning for a 9-2 win.  Cole Brown pitched the complete game victory with 4 Ks and allowed only 2 hits.  Andrew Mahase added support on offense and defence with stolen bases, a run and outfield put outs.  Evan Ganhao reached base 3 times and scored twice. Ty Bond doubled with runners on for 2 RBIs, and Andy McLaren had 4 put outs at shortstop along with 3 runs scored.

After the semi-final win the Red Sox had a quick turnaround to face the Belle River Braves in the final. The Braves reached the final with a high-powered offense, going 4-0 up to the finals by outscoring their opponents 46-6.  Pickering gave the ball to their off-speed specialist Joe Vragovic to tame the Belle River offense.  After giving up a couple of early runs Joe handed the Braves 14 consecutive outs with a mix of fly balls, soft grounders and K's.  However, with some untimely errors on defense and the Brave's hitters finally adjusting, the Belle River offense generated 10 runs in the final innings to defeat the Red Sox 12-2.

The coaching staff of Lenn Bond, Mike Ganhao, Al Payne and Kev Hsu thanks the Red Sox parents for making this a great weekend.  We all extend our thanks to the volunteers of the Kincardine Minor Baseball Association for running a superb event.  We highly recommend this tournament to any Midget teams who are seeking an exciting baseball experience in a beach-side setting.
